'A Family Undertaking'
Such a Beautiful Film
~ A Student's Perspective

A Family Undertaking

The By My Own Heart and Hand training program starts with the documentary "A Family Undertaking".   This is the overview that PBS gives "Aug 3, 2004, The film "A Family Undertaking" explores the growing home funeral movement by following several families in their most intimate moments as they reclaim the end of life, forgoing a typical mortuary..." (including Pashta's teacher) Review by one of the filmmakers.

***

This film yet again, touched me very deeply.

The beauty of the relationships of the journeyers, families and companions really shone through.  The love and connection to the process really allows people to have a sense of agency during this phase of life transition.

The journeyers seem so much closer to their relationship with the transition and with their very souls.

The healing power of the home funeral and dying process is palpable.  What a wonderful way to share in this deeply spiritual journey!

All of the preparations and celebrations were so personal and touching.  I felt like I was being invited into a very sacred space with each of them.

It always smacks me up the side of the head when I watch the funeral and embalming industry.  Some of these practices just feel so unnatural and out of flow with life.

The practical tips about knowing the legal requirements was a very important piece of advice.

It is so important for people to know that they have options and varied levels of support for the death and dying process. The journey is as diverse as there are people, and what a blessing this home funeral process can be for so many.
